As the 2024 election heats up, cadres of political professionals and well-resourced organizations and individuals are mobilizing behind the scenes to influence not only the outcomes of the election in November, but the political agendas that will follow. The panel will be moderated by Daniel Laurison (Swarthmore College), author of Producing Politics and scholar of inequality, political participation, and campaigns. 

Panelists:

• Sarah Bryner, Director of Research and Strategy at OpenSecrets.org. Dr. Bryner is an expert on money in politics, lobbying, and political research methods.

• James Jones, Associate Professor of Africana Studies and Sociology at Rutgers University. Dr. Jones' new book The Last Plantation: Racism and Resistance in the Halls of Congress examines race, power, and inequality in the Congressional workplace.

• Wendy Li, Postdoctoral Fellow at the SNF Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Li's research examines revolving door lobbying, corporate politics, and political influence in regulatory agencies.

The Center for Politics and Race in America was named in honor of the late-Lt. Gov. Sheila Y. Oliver, the first Black woman in New Jersey to hold statewide office, at a ceremony attended by Lt. Gov. Tahesha Way, Oliver’s family, members of the Sheila Y. Oliver Civic Association, and leaders from Johnson & Johnson.

Dr Jones will speak at the SNF Agora Institute Seminar at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD.

Dr. Jones will moderate a panel discussion about Black Voters and the 2024 elections.

The panel will include Dr. Saladin Ambar, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, Ashanti Jones: Policy Analyst at the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice and New Jersey Assemblywoman Shavonda Sumter.

Dr Jones will speak at the Race and Public Space Workshop at New York University’s Institute for Public Knowledge.
